Fly to Funchal on the south coast. Many flights route through Lisbon. From the airport it's 20 minutes to the old town by bus or cab. The island is compact; most places are 45–90 minutes from Funchal by car or public transport.

When to go

The island is mild year-round. Summer (June–August) is warmest and driest, with the most visitors. Autumn (September–November) and spring (March–May) bring fewer tourists and occasional rain. Winter (December–February) is still walkable but cloudier and wetter at altitude.

Getting around

Funchal has local buses reaching most areas. Levada walks (irrigation channel trails) are the main walking attraction and require no particular transport. A hire car or taxi is easiest for exploring villages and the north coast. Cable cars link Funchal with the hilltop for views.

Fishing villages on the wetter, quieter north side. Greener and less developed; good for a day trip.

Beaches and quieter valleys; a secondary base if seeking a softer stay than Funchal.
