Funchal (FNC), 20 minutes from the old town

Fly to Funchal on the south coast. Many flights route through Lisbon. From the airport it's 20 minutes to the old town by bus or cab. The island is compact; most places are 45–90 minutes from Funchal by car or public transport.

When to go

The island is mild year-round. Summer (June–August) is warmest and driest, with the most visitors. Autumn (September–November) and spring (March–May) bring fewer tourists and occasional rain. Winter (December–February) is still walkable but cloudier and wetter at altitude.

Getting around

Funchal has local buses reaching most areas. Levada walks (irrigation channel trails) are the main walking attraction and require no particular transport. A hire car or taxi is easiest for exploring villages and the north coast. Cable cars link Funchal with the hilltop for views.

Neighborhoods and areas

Funchal

Port city on the south coast. The main base with restaurants, markets, cable car, and museum access.

North coast (Câmara de Lobos and villages)

Fishing villages on the wetter, quieter north side. Greener and less developed; good for a day trip.

Central highlands and levada trails

Cool, forested interior with walking routes along historic irrigation channels. Accessible by car or foot from Funchal.

Eastern coast (Machico area)

Beaches and quieter valleys; a secondary base if seeking a softer stay than Funchal.

• Levada trails are the iconic walk; they are gentle and follow water channels, but some sections are narrow or muddy—proper footwear matters.
• The island is Portuguese, and Portuguese is the main language; English is less common outside tourist areas.
• The currency is the euro. Prices are higher than mainland Portugal.
• Altitude brings cooler, cloudier weather; bring layers for the mountains.
• Ferries to Porto Santo island exist but are infrequent; plan around schedules.
