Haneda (HND), closest to central Tokyo

Fly to Haneda (HND), which is 15–30 minutes from central Tokyo by train or cab. Haneda is the newer, closer airport and is preferable to Narita (which is an hour further). The metro reaches most of Tokyo; a car is unnecessary.

When to go

Spring (March–May, cherry blossom season) and autumn (October–November, fall colors) are pleasant and popular—book ahead. Summer (June–August) is hot and humid. Winter (December–February) is dry and cool, fewer tourists, but quieter. Golden Week (late April) and New Year are crowded and prices rise.

Getting around

The train and metro system is unparalleled—frequent, clean, and reaches everywhere. Walking is the main pleasure in each neighborhood. The Shinkansen (bullet train) reaches Kyoto in 2 hours and Mount Fuji in 90 minutes, making day trips easy. Buses are another option but trains are faster.

Shibuya
Busy commercial hub with the famous Crossing, shopping, nightlife. Most touristy.
Shinjuku
Neon district with red-light areas, gaming arcades, restaurants, and energy. Very busy.
Asakusa
Historic temple district with Senso-ji shrine, local shops, and a more traditional feel.
Harajuku
Fashion and youth culture hub; walk the shopping streets and Meiji Shrine.
